    Quick Answer

How Swiss companies build AI agents: From idea to productive agent in 8 weeks – with Copilot Studio, Azure AI Foundry, or Replit.

Microsoft 365 Copilot Teamwork Agents are purpose-built AI agents that help groups plan meetings, share knowledge, and collaborate more effectively across Teams, SharePoint, and Viva Engage. Unveiled at Microsoft Build 2026 as the next evolution of the Copilot ecosystem, they fundamentally change how collaborative work looks inside Microsoft 365.

    What are Copilot Teamwork Agents?

Teamwork Agents are specialised Copilot agents designed not for individuals, but for groups, teams, and projects. They act proactively: analysing calendars, documents, chat histories, and meetings to surface relevant information at the right moment – without anyone having to ask explicitly.

Microsoft announced three core agents at Build 2026:

    1. Meeting Prep Agent

The Meeting Prep Agent prepares meetings automatically. It reads invitations, attendee lists, relevant documents from SharePoint, and previous Teams conversations – then generates a structured briefing that appears in Teams 30 minutes before the meeting.

    • Automatic summary of open items from previous meetings
    • Agenda suggestions based on active projects
    • Display of documents likely needed in the meeting
    • Attendee context (role, last interaction, open tasks)

For Swiss executives running six to eight meetings a day, this is a significant time saving: the 15–20 minutes previously spent on manual preparation largely disappear.

    2. Communicator Agent

The Communicator Agent helps teams reach the right people on the right channel. It proactively suggests who should be informed about a decision, drafts Viva Engage posts for cross-team announcements, and summarises missed conversations in a contextually relevant way.

    Concrete scenarios:

    • After a project decision, the agent automatically suggests which stakeholders should be notified
    • When an employee returns from absence, they receive a structured "what did I miss" summary – filtered by relevance to their role
    • In large organisations (hospitals, public administrations), it helps route announcements to the correct departmental channels

    3. SharePoint Knowledge Agent

The SharePoint Knowledge Agent makes an organisation's knowledge genuinely accessible. It answers questions directly with source references from SharePoint documents, wikis, and shared content – without users needing to know where a piece of information is stored.

    • Semantic search across all SharePoint sites the user has access to
    • Direct answers with source links rather than long result lists
    • Automatic updates when source documents change
    • Particularly valuable for onboarding and for QMS documentation (e.g. in clinics or ISO-certified companies)

Work IQ: The Context Engine Behind the Agents

All three Teamwork Agents are powered by Work IQ – the new context layer that Microsoft introduced as a standalone concept at Build 2026.

Work IQ is the intelligence layer that extends the Microsoft 365 semantic graph (formerly Microsoft Graph) with role context, team dynamics, and work patterns. Concretely, Work IQ understands:

    • Who you are: your role, your team, your management chain
    • What you work on: active projects, frequently used documents, recurring meetings
    • Who you work with: collaboration patterns, expert profiles within the organisation
    • How your team works: working hours, preferred communication channels, meeting culture

Work IQ is not a new app, but an API layer that all Copilot agents access. The model does not learn from your personal content to train other users' experiences – all data stays within your tenant.

Privacy and governance in Work IQ

Microsoft confirms that Work IQ operates entirely within the existing Microsoft 365 compliance mechanisms:

    • Content access is strictly bounded by existing permissions (no overreach)
    • Sensitivity Labels and Microsoft Purview DLP apply to Copilot responses
    • Audit logs for all Copilot activity in Microsoft Purview
    • For Swiss organisations: data stays in Swiss data centres (Zurich / Geneva) when the default region Switzerland is configured

Expanded Copilot Availability: What Changes in Licensing

An important part of the Build 2026 announcements concerns availability: Microsoft is extending Microsoft 365 Copilot to Business plans that were previously restricted to Enterprise customers.

Copilot for SMBs – the new licensing structure

    PlanCopilot accessTeamwork AgentsWork IQ

Microsoft 365 Business PremiumCopilot add-on availableFullFull
    Microsoft 365 E3Copilot add-on availableFullFull
    Microsoft 365 E5Copilot integratedFullFull + Advanced

The Copilot add-on currently costs Swiss organisations approximately CHF 32–35 per user per month (depending on exchange rate and CSP terms). Teamwork Agents are included in the Copilot add-on at no additional charge.

For most Swiss SMBs, Business Premium + Copilot add-on is the recommended entry point: it combines the full security stack (Defender, Intune, Entra ID P2) with the new agentic AI capabilities.

Business vs. Enterprise for Work IQ

Work IQ in its full form (team dynamics analysis, organisation-wide expertise discovery) requires Business Premium or E3 at minimum. On Business Basic and Standard, only the personal Copilot context is active – without cross-group analysis.

What This Means for Swiss Organisations

    Hospitals and clinics

The SharePoint Knowledge Agent is particularly relevant for medical institutions: it makes SOPs, drug lists, hygiene protocols, and onboarding documents directly accessible inside Teams – without nursing staff needing to know which SharePoint library a document is in.

The Meeting Prep Agent reduces preparation time for recurring governance meetings (e.g. weekly ward leader meetings) by automatically surfacing protocol extracts, open actions, and relevant quality documents.

    Public administration and associations

The Communicator Agent is well-suited for organisations with many parallel channels (departments, specialist areas, regional offices) that need to distribute decisions and announcements in a targeted way – without manual channel selection.

    Professional services and consulting

For consulting firms, the combination of the Meeting Prep Agent (client meetings) and SharePoint Knowledge Agent (internal methodologies, templates, reference projects) delivers an immediate productivity gain.

Agentic AI in Microsoft 365: A Step Beyond Copilot Chat

Teamwork Agents mark the transition from reactive Copilot interactions (user asks, Copilot responds) to proactive agents that act autonomously. This is not marketing language – it is an architectural shift:

    • Agents have access to triggers (calendar event, new message, document change)
    • They can execute multi-step workflows (read document → summarise → create briefing → post in Teams)
    • They work asynchronously without a human initiating every step

This architecture is built on Microsoft Copilot Studio, which allows organisations to build their own agents with company-specific knowledge and custom workflows. Teamwork Agents are essentially the out-of-the-box version of this capability.

    Rollout Schedule and Availability

According to the Build 2026 announcements:

    • Meeting Prep Agent: Generally available from Q3 2026 (for all Copilot licences)
    • Communicator Agent: Public Preview from Q3 2026, GA from Q4 2026
    • SharePoint Knowledge Agent: GA from Q3 2026 (extension of existing SharePoint Agents capability)
    • Work IQ API: Public Preview for Enterprise customers from Q3 2026; Business plans to follow in Q4 2026

For Swiss customers with EU Data Boundary and Swiss DC configuration: all features will be available in the Swiss region once they reach GA.

    Next Steps for Swiss Organisations

    1. 1Check your Copilot licence: Do you already have a Copilot add-on? If so, Teamwork Agents are included at no extra cost.
    2. 2Ensure SharePoint quality: Teamwork Agents are only as good as the content they access. A structured SharePoint intranet architecture is a prerequisite. Use our SharePoint Best Practices Checker to measure your current state.
    3. 3Define a pilot group: Start Teamwork Agents with a pilot group of 10–20 users in a clearly scoped project context.
    4. 4Work IQ governance: Work with your legal and privacy teams to clarify which content from which SharePoint areas should be accessible to Copilot.
