In our Work IQ foundations article we described what Microsoft means by Work IQ and where the marketing ends. This article tackles the practical question: Where does Work IQ plug into existing systems, what can you actually do with the Work IQ API today, and how should a Swiss organization set up a realistic adoption path?
Important framing: An earlier version of this article presented Work IQ API specifics (RESTful surface, MCP / A2A support, CLI, availability dates) as established facts. In reality the API is in preview and individual building blocks are announced but not uniformly available. The text has been revised accordingly.
Where Work IQ actually integrates today
Work IQ is deeply embedded in the Microsoft ecosystem — the following overview shows the most important integration points:

Dynamics 365 and Dataverse
Microsoft is building the bridge between Microsoft 365 Copilot and Dynamics 365 / Dataverse step by step. Copilot capabilities are already in production in Dynamics 365 Sales and Customer Service. Deeper joint experiences — where Microsoft 365 Copilot cleanly accesses Dataverse content — are on the roadmap; individual building blocks are in preview. The roadmap entry per feature is what counts.
Power Platform
- Power Apps: Custom apps can use Copilot and connector capabilities; deep Work IQ integration via the API is in preview.
- Power Automate: Flows can trigger Copilot actions (e.g. document creation).
- Power BI: Natural-language Q&A and Copilot in Power BI are available; scope varies by license and region.
SharePoint and OneDrive
SharePoint and OneDrive are the most important data sources for Work IQ. Tenants with clean permissioning, well-maintained sensitivity labels and archived dead sites get visibly better Copilot results. Tenants with permissive sharing (e.g. "Everyone except external users" on sensitive sites) risk oversharing through Copilot. More on this in our SharePoint Storage Monster article.
Copilot Connectors
Connectors plug third-party systems (CRM, ITSM, wiki, file sharing, etc.) into the semantic index. Microsoft maintains a continuously growing catalog of pre-built connectors; custom connectors can be built using the Microsoft 365 Copilot connector model.
The Work IQ API — what you realistically need to know today
The Work IQ API is the programmatic surface that lets development teams use Work IQ capabilities inside their own applications and agents. As of April 2026:
- The API is in preview. Scope, authentication, quotas and pricing may change.
- Microsoft positions the API as a way to bring Copilot intelligence into your own apps and agents — including the existing tenant permission and compliance guarantees.
- Standards such as MCP (Model Context Protocol) and A2A (Agent-to-Agent) are communicated as roadmap items. Which exactly are usable, and when, depends on the tenant and licensing context.
- The authoritative current spec lives exclusively in Microsoft Learn and the Microsoft 365 Copilot developer materials.
Realistic API use during the preview:

For production workloads: start with the first-party Copilot experiences or with Copilot Studio — the API is the right choice when you need to go beyond what those provide.
A realistic adoption path
- 1Tenant inventory: Where is which data, with which permissions and sensitivity labels? Where is content massively shared via "Everyone" groups?
- 2Hygiene wave: Repair permissions, retro-fit labels, restrict external sharing — before broad Copilot rollout.
- 3Use-case pilot: Three clearly bounded use cases, one pilot group, clean before/after measurement.
- 4Skill and agent strategy: Which recurring tasks justify a dedicated agent in Copilot Studio?
- 5API evaluation (optional): If you build your own apps, run a preview PoC on the Work IQ API — kept separate from production systems.
- 6Scale with governance: Roll out broadly only after a successful pilot, with clear adoption, risk and ROI measurement.
